Formation of a New City

newhallAfter a long process, Santa Clarita finally became an official city in December 15, 1987. There were previous proposals and attempts to create a new county, but they were not successful. The city has grown rapidly the past decades with recent residential contruction, building of new parks, metro stations, new roads and more. Check out the growth of Newhall, which is the southernmost area of Santa Clarita.

Hey, I’m from there! Even over the last decade or so, the growth of the city has been phenomenal– it is also interesting to watch how development has moved outside the technical city boarders (such as west of the 5) due to controlled development laws.

I have always imagined that if there is ever to be a physically continuous zone of development connecting the main LA connurbation with Santa Barbara, it’s going to occur along the 126-33-150 corridor, not along the coast. While the NIMBY’s obsess with what’s happening in coastal Ventura county, meanwhile the growth you’ve noted to have jumped West across the 5 might just keep right on heading West. We’ll see.
